August 12 and 13 bring the Perseids Meteor Shower. The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862.
The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 12 and the morning of August 13.
The waning gibbous moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year. But if you are patient, you may still be able to catch quite a few good ones. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
August 19 see Mercury at Greatest Western Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest western elongation of 18.6 degrees from the Sun.
This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. Look for the planet low in the eastern sky just before sunrise.

Gardeners, you can plant!
Turnips: Succulent Japanese turnips can be picked when they’re the size of a walnut or ping pong ball. They are great roasted on the barbecue with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Silky Sweet is another good variety. You can pick them when they’re small and enjoy them raw or cooked.
Baby kale: Kale is another favorite green. Most of spring-planted kale plants are a good size by fall. The tender leaves of baby kale sown in August are welcome. Grow cover protects young kale crops when temperatures really start to dip—though kale doesn’t mind a touch of frost. You might harvest well into November.
Beets: Look for early beet varieties, like Chioggia and Detroit Dark Red. If things don’t go according to plan, and you’re left with minuscule beets, you can still enjoy the leafy greens in a salad or stir fry.
Bok choy: Spring-sown crops can bolt quickly if there is a sudden hot spell, but in the fall, these leafy greens are cold tolerant. Mini varieties, include Toy Choy and Asian Delight.
Radishes: Radishes are a quick-growing crop that can mature in as little as 21 days. They don’t love the hot dry weather, so you can wait to the end of August or even into September to plant them. Spring radish varieties, like Cherry Belle can be planted in late summer for a fall harvest. Winter radishes can be planted in late summer for a winter harvest.
Salad greens: It only takes about four to five weeks before you can begin to snip cut-and-come-again lettuces. Lettuce seeds can be sown in late August and you can harvest the leaves through the first frost. Arugula is another fast-growing green that can be sown towards the end of August into early September.
Broccoli: Broccoli is a cool-weather crop that will benefit from a head start under grow lights. Sow seeds indoors under grow lights in July or early August before planting the seedlings in the garden.
Carrots: Sow carrot seeds in late July and early August. A favorite is the round Romeo variety planted in early August with success. You can also deep mulch carrots for winter harvests if you start them soon enough.
A note about pets
Anyone on Nextdoor has read over the last two weeks that dogs seem to be defending their territory at the expense of passers by on the street (community property).
An aggressive dog has injured another dog walking by on the street with their owner. Runners and walkers have reported being obstructed and frightened. The Lodge office is engaged to notify property owners.
Please be aware that owners of dogs at residences can be liable for loose animals, both as a civil problem, involving Owensville police, and as a violation of Peaceful Valley Lake community rules. Your dogs need to be fenced or leashed while outside.

August 9 Full Moon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 07:56 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Sturgeon Moon because the large sturgeon fish of the Great Lakes and other major lakes were more easily caught at this time of year.

Eclipse Excitement in Europe!
August 12, 2026
will be a total solar eclipse, an upcoming celestial event that has captured the attention of astronomy enthusiasts worldwide. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the earth, blocking the sun’s light and creating a shadow on the earth’s surface. It’s an awe-inspiring sight; you can even see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, with your own eyes.
The eclipse will begin over the North Atlantic Ocean and move southeastward toward Europe. It will then travel across Europe and Asia, including parts of the United Kingdom, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Russia, and China, before ending over the Pacific Ocean.
The best place to see the total eclipse will be over the Arctic Ocean between Greenland and Russia, where the moon completely covers the sun.
