A promising fish story
Upon suggestion from Kyle Meyer and recommendation from Gary Brauks, former fisheries advisor with Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), we welcomed 1000 little Black Crappie in mid November.
A mixed committee of board and non board members was formed to manage this over the next few years (Gary Brauks, Doug August, Tom Bolte, Kyle Meyer, Brian Tharp, and Dan Hoemecke). The committee, upon consultation with MDC biologist Scott Williams, is planning to incrementally add more crappie and is considering other species as well. Williams did the population survey for the lake earlier in the year.
Gary said, “The shad population in the lake would be the crappie’s main diet because there is an abundant shad population. We are planning to add more fish habitat with trees and artificial structures, too.”
Dan Hoemeke mentioned an idea to stock Yellow Perch and Hybrid Striped Bass. Both species would help control the shad over population. They also promise challenging angling and good eating.
The fish stocking in November cost $1500.00. They were 3 to 5 inch fingerlings, expected to grow to catch-size (9 inches) by late next year. Gary said the committee will be implementing a 9 inch length limit and a daily possession of 10 for a couple years until the population increases.

Elections, water board
The Public Water Supply District (PWSD) #1 has 1 to 2 board member openings every year. If there is more than one candidate, there is an election held in April. If there are no candidates and the current candidate(s) are willing to remain in office, no election is required.
The PWSD is comprised of 5 subdistricts. Subdistricts 3 and 4 are the upcoming board member openings. Candidates can apply at the PWSD office (at the Peaceful Valley Lake lodge). To be eligible to apply, you must be a registered voter in Gasconade County and a full-time resident of Peaceful Valley Lake. While there is no salary, board members can qualify to receive $100 for each monthly board meeting they attend. To qualify, board members must complete certification training.

Verhulst memorial
Tom Bush wants to share with you the memorial he built in memory of the Verhulsts. The installation, a bench and etched plate, is on their lake property. Their children still own it and say anyone is welcome to visit.
Springfield 1884 Trapdoor Gun Raffle
This authenticated antique rifle was donated by lake members Mr. & Mrs. Ziemen to support the lake’s security gate fundraiser. Tickets are $10 each, or 5 for $40. Members can view the gun in person at the clubhouse during regular office hours.
Brian Tharp plans to invite the Ziemens to draw the winner at the Christmas Jingle Mingle, Dec. 13.

Not likely truly from George, but widely circulated as such. The recipe above is indeed a true vintage recipe. However, it is believed to have come from the 19th century, whereas George Washington lived in the 18th century. Mount Vernon’s librarians said no eggnog recipe has been definitively linked to Washington.
