You will see progress on gates!

The lower security gate, off Hwy. Y, is ready for hardware installation. You will see things happening there as weather permits. However, logistics for residents to use the system will not be implemented until later in the year, after people are familiarized with function and have passes and codes to operate the gates.

People will ease into using the gate at the lower entrance before the upper gate is fully implemented. That way, if there are problems during the trial period, you will still be able to use the upper entrance as any issues get resolved.

Lake board of directors elections

The Annual Meeting for members will be April 26, 2025. There will be three board positions open this year for end of terms: Dan Hoemeke, current Vice President, 2nd term; Megan Jost, current Treasurer, first term; Cathy August, current Secretary, 1st term. Each board member may serve two consecutive terms.

Groundhog Day, February 2

FROM CALENDAR-365.COM

Groundhog Day started with the folklore idea that the groundhog (also known as woodchuck) comes out of its home to “predict” the weather. Legend has it that on this morning, if a groundhog can see its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it cannot see its shadow, spring is on the way.

Groundhog Day has roots in the Christian tradition of Candlemas Day, when clergy blessed and distributed candles for winter. Germans expanded this concept with an animal (the hedgehog) as a means of predicting weather. Once they came to America, German settlers in Pennsylvania continued the tradition, exchanging the hedgehogs for groundhogs, which were plentiful in the Keystone State. In 1887, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club declared that Phil, the Punxsutawney groundhog, was America's only true weather-forecasting groundhog.

Valentines Day, February 14

FROM CALENDAR-365.COM

It is said that the popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome inspired the holiday. Valentine was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers, forbidden to marry, and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, Saint Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius. Before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

The day was associated with romantic love in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which couples expressed their love by exchanging flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). Today, Valentine's Day is recognized as a cultural and commercial celebration all around the world.

Presidents Day, February 17

FROM CALENDAR-365.COM

Washington’s day was originally celebrated on his birthday, February 22. Washington's Birthday was the first and only national holiday to celebrate an individual American through the early 1900s. The shift from Washington's Birthday to Presidents' Day began in the late 1960s when Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This law sought to shift the celebration of several federal holidays from specific dates to a series of predetermined Mondays.

Some argued that shifting holidays from their original dates would cheapen their meaning. Widespread support from both the private sector and labor unions was seen as a fail proof way to strengthen retail sales.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act included celebration of Washington's Birthday with Abraham Lincoln's, which fell on the estimated date of February 12. Many supported joining the two days as a way of giving equal recognition to two of America's prominent statesmen.

The Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968 and officially took effect in 1971. Washington's celebration moved to the third Monday of February, joined with a celebration of Lincoln.

Planet Party

FROM ALMANAC.COM

In February Venus, our neighboring planet, dazzles at an incredible magnitude of -4.8, enough to cast shadows on Earth! It shines alone as a solitary beacon in the western sky with a bright white light.

On the opposite side of the sky, Mars blazes at -1, while Sirius and Jupiter dazzle at -2. This celestial eye candy continues all month, with Mars slightly fading to magnitude 0 as it stands stationary in Gemini.

February 1: Venus and the Moon

On the 1st, Venus will be very near the 13%-lit waxing crescent Moon. The planet is just 2.3 degrees to the Moon’s right. Start looking at sunset

Known as the Snow Moon, the full Moon will reach peak illumination at 8:53 A.M. EST on Wednesday, February 12. It will be below the horizon, so for the best view, look for it starting the night before or later on Wednesday. The Moon will drift above the horizon in the east around sunset and reach its highest point in the sky around midnight.

About that Venus again

This month, Venus shines at her brightest for the year near Valentine’s Day. How fitting for the goddess of love!

Venus will reach its greatest brilliancy for the year—at magnitude -4.6—February 16. At night, only the Moon outshines her. Look west during the twilight hours. Nothing else compares.

The PVL Book Club will not meet in February. Usually meetings are the 4th Monday of each month. The book is announced at that meeting for the next month. It is a very casual meeting, starting between 4:30 and 5 pm. People bring little foods and drinks. Everyone is welcome whether you read the book or not!
