Gather for spring ‘25 rummage!

Time to think about spring cleaning in winter again! Brian Tharp is heading up another rummage sale for 2025.

When you have reckoned with those items you can live without, call the office (573-617-9615) for direction to drop off at a collection point.

Remember things may be stored outside, so pack them to be critter and cold-proof.

Elections, water board

The Public Water Supply District (PWSD) #1 has 1 to 2 board member openings every year. If there is more than one candidate, there is an election held in April. If there are no candidates and the current candidate(s) are willing to remain in office, no election is required.

The PWSD is comprised of 5 subdistricts. Subdistricts 3 and 4 are the upcoming board member openings. Candidates can apply at the PWSD office (at the Peaceful Valley Lake lodge). To be eligible to apply, you must be a registered voter in Gasconade County and a full-time resident of Peaceful Valley Lake. While there is no salary, board members can qualify to receive $100 for each monthly board meeting they attend. To qualify, board members must complete certification training.

If you have any questions/wish to apply, please contact Laura Buck at (573)437-7808 or at the PWSD office.

The sum of entries (in red, above) of a 9 x 9 multiplication table is 2025.

Geeking out on 2025!

2025 is probably the only positive square which remains a square by adding 1 to each digit (obtaining 3136) as well as increasing just one digit (the first, obtaining 3025).

Good News Astrology, January 2025

FROM GOODNEWSNETWORK.ORG, Rob Brezsny provides his weekly wisdom to enlighten thinking and motivate mood.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19):
Since 1985, musician David Gilmour has led Pink Floyd. The band has sold over 250 million records. He’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in both the UK and the US. But my favorite thing about Gilmour is that he’s a passionate activist who has crusaded for environmentalism, poverty, and human (and animal) rights. A few years ago, he auctioned off 120 of his guitars, raising over $21 million for an environmentalist charity. In accordance with astrological omens, I propose we make him one of your inspirational role models in 2025, Capricorn. May he mobilize you to use your stature and clout to perform an array of good works that are of service to your world.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18):
Aquarian author Virginia Woolf extolled the virtues of cultivating a supple soul that thrives on change. She pledged to be relentless in her commitment to be authentically herself and not succumb to groupthink. I recommend you make these two of your featured themes in 2025. To inspire your efforts, I will quote her radical perspective at length: “Movement and change are the essence of our being; rigidity is death; conformity is death: let us say what comes into our heads, repeat ourselves, contradict ourselves, fling out the wildest nonsense, and follow the most fantastic fancies without caring what the world does or thinks or says.”

Suzie Jost’s
Gooey Butter Cake Recipe

…because it was suggested to share when people raved over it at the December 2024 Jingle Mingle!

INGREDIENTS:

Layer 1

  • 1 Golden Butter Recipe Yellow Cake Mix

  • ½ cup salted butter, softened

  • 2 large eggs

Layer 2

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • 4 cups powdered sugar (1 pound bag)

  • 1 large egg

  • Juice from 1 lemon

  • Zest from the lemon

DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees; grease (Pam) 9 X 13 pan.

  • Mix cake mix, butter and eggs until thick and smooth

  • Spread and press mixture into pan

  • Mix remaining ingredients on low until smooth. Pour over cake mixture. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top to garnish.

  • Bake 45 minutes, leaving it slightly gooey. You will notice a slight crust on top rather that a jelly texture.

NOTE: It is done when a crust has formed on top, yet the cake is slightly gooey and jiggles a bit when you shake the dish.

  • Garnish with more sprinkles of powdered sugar if desires. Cool completely before cutting. Serve and enjoy.

  • Store at room temperature, covered in air tight container for up to two days or refrigerate up to a week.

Superstitions from around the world

FROM COSMOPOLITAN.COM

Be born on January 1.

That’s it. That’s the story. Congrats on having good luck forever.

Step with your right foot first.

Many cultures think that if you step into the New Year leading with your *right* foot, you’ll start it out, well, on the right foot.

Bang Bread against your walls. An Irish superstition is that hitting bread on your doors and walls can fend off evil spirits and bad luck.

Smash a pomegranate. Greek tradition says the pomegranate is a symbol of abundance, fertility, luck, and prosperity. If those are your wishes, throw a pomegranate down at your home’s entryway.

Choose a special first guest.

The first person who walks through your door on New Year’s Day is very important in Scotland. The so-called First Footer should be someone with generally good vibes. It doesn’t hurt if they come with gifts either.

Eat 12 grapes at midnight. In Spain, the midnight snack brings good luck every month for the year.

Keep an eye on the weather. If the wind blows from the south in the early hours of New Year’s Day, the next year will bring prosperity. But if it’s coming from the north, gird your loins for a year of bad weather. Meanwhile, wind coming from the east brings famine and calamities. But wind from the west means the year will “witness plentiful supplies of milk and fish but also see the death of a very important person.”

Kiss someone at midnight. Superstition says that if you kiss someone who gives you goosebumps when the clock hits 12, your love will last all year long.

Eat black eyed peas and collards. Eating black-eyed peas and collard greens on the first day of the new year brings good luck and prosperity.

Toss dishes at your neighbor’s house. This Danish tradition is a low-key popularity contest, as the superstition encourages you to break dishes on the doorsteps of all your friends and family for good luck. The more doorsteps you hit up, the luckier you’ll be.

Throw furniture out a window. In Italy, people toss belongings—including furniture—out the window. It’s thought to make room for only positive vibes in the new year.

Snack on soba at midnight. In Japan, it’s traditional to eat buckwheat soba noodles at midnight because the long, skinny noodles signify prosperity and longevity.

Get loud. Firecrackers and noisemakers are part of New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world because folklore says loud sounds ward off evil spirits.

Pop the door open at midnight. In the Philippines, opening doors and windows at midnight clears out bad vibes to allow good luck in.

Steer clear of lobster and chicken. Because chickens have wings, your luck could fly away, and since lobsters walk backward, consuming them might hold you back.

Eat King cake when the clock strikes 12. If you’re lucky enough to get served a gold coin (or in some cases, a tiny plastic baby) tucked away in the batter, you’ll have an wealthy and prosperous new year.

Organized fun

Join the Wednesday dinner club 5:30 Wednesdays: The location changes each week. Randy Fuller (or friend) posts on Nextdoor by Wednesday evening where to be the following week. People decide where to meet drawing out of a "hat.” All invited!

The PVL Book Club will next meet Jan. 21, 4:30/5:00 at the Lodge. Book is Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno-Garcia. The book centers on a young woman investigating her cousin's claims that her husband is trying to murder her. Bring little foods and drinks. Everyone is welcome whether you read the book or not!

Good Riddance, But Now What?

FROM PANMACMILLAN.COM

By Ogden Nash

Come, children, gather round my knee;
Something is about to be.
Tonight’s December thirty-first,
Something is about to burst.
The clock is crouching, dark and small,
Like a time bomb in the hall.
Hark! It’s midnight, children dear.
Duck! Here comes another year.
