Fishing Tourney Champs, Oct. 20

From Brian Tharp — It was a beautiful day for the fishing tournament at Peaceful Valley Lake, and the fish were biting (for some)!

First Place and Big Bass went to Kyle Meyer (our local Shelter insurance agent) and his partner Derrick, pictured above.

Second Place went to Seth Turner.

Third Place was taken by Matt Mosher and his mom, Deb, pictured below.

“Congrats and thank you everyone!” from Brian Tharp, organizer.

More on lake inhabitants

From Jamie Gerloff — At the October Board meeting, Kyle Meyer made a compelling case to stock the lake with crappie instead of catfish this fall. After discussion, a motion was made and carried, to use the amount previously approved for catfish to purchase crappie instead.

Meyers is an avid sport fisherman and a member who is involved with kid's tournaments. He has data from fish finding technology on his boat to back his initiative: catfish are plenty; crappie, not so much.

He talked with Gary Brauks (on the board and also an avid fisherman) prior to the meeting. Gary had time to reach out to the biologist, Scott Williams, who did the fish study earlier this year, to get his thoughts on the proposal.

Scott did not disagree with Meyer’s conclusion. He did measure crappie on his survey this year, but says misreadings of populations is not unusual due to the limitations of his procedure. Scott did say we have enough shad in the lake that young crappie will not all be eaten by bass before they can spawn, continuing that it definitely would not hurt anything to stock crappie. His recommendation to stock catfish was based on the fact that they spawn once a year, which typically does not keep up with the harvest.

The plan to re-balance the fish species in the lake will take a couple years of consistency. It was also proposed that we decrease the crappie and blue gill daily limits to bump populations, but that's not decided yet.

A mixed committee of board and non board members was formed to manage this over the next few years (Gary Brauks, Doug August, Tom Bolte, Kyle Meyer, Brian Tharp, and Dan Hoemecke).

if anyone else wants to participate, they would welcome you.

Recycling research

The working group (mostly Brian Tharp) is focusing on a multi-cavity dumpster for self-sorting your household recyclables. Other communities in the area have such a system going. The container would be hauled to a recycling center to be emptied periodically.

If you would like to be involved or participate, please contact board member Brian Tharp at 660-787-0058 (call/text) or email [email protected]

Dates of Note

3 November: 2 am Sunday is the end of daylight saving time. Fall back an hour until March 9, 2025

5 November: <<< VOTE! >>>

11 November from VA.gov: Veterans Day, was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the end of WWI, “the war to end all wars.” The same date was observed among many allies. Then WWII began a few years later.

President Eisenhower changed the name to Veterans Day and made it a national holiday in 1954. It was designated for all veterans of foreign wars and is always celebrated with ceremony around the Tomb of the Unknowns in the Memorial Amphitheater, Washington D.C.

15 November:The full Beaver Moon occurs, named because it was the perfect time, in colonial America, to trap beavers for their winter coats — before ice formed.

18 November from EarthSky.org -- In 2024, the famous Leonid meteor shower will compete with moonlight from a waning gibbous moon on the shower’s peak morning, November 18.

Predicted peak: The peak is predicted for 0500 UTC/GMT November 18.
When to watch: Watch late on the night of November 17 until dawn on November 18. The morning of November 17 might be worthwhile, too.
Duration of shower: November 3 through December 2.

28 November: Thanksgiving Day, USA

FYI about rules on the lake

A Missouri Department of Conservation officer happened to be at the lake this week. Doug August asked him, since this is a private lake, is it under the scrutiny of MDC. He said that it absolutely is because there are two creeks that feed the lake.

As most farmers know, watersheds (and parts of watersheds) are governed by the state agency. That also qualifies any part of the system for grants, by the way.

So, in essence, all boaters and fishermen need to follow MDC rules, and by extension, Missouri law. He also said that he does occasionally come out to check fishing licenses.

Organized fun

Join the Wednesday dinner club 5:30 Wednesdays: The location changes each week. Randy Fuller (or friend) posts on Nextdoor by Wednesday evening where to be the following week. People decide where to meet drawing out of a "hat.” All invited!

The PVL Book Club will next meet Nov.18, 4:30/5:00 at the Lodge. Book is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. The story juxtaposes an exquisite ode to the natural world against a profound coming of age story and haunting mystery. Bring little foods and drinks. Everyone is welcome whether you read the book or not!
