Lake facility updates!

Pickle Ball lines On the tennis court: Thanks to new resident Terry Owen’s question at the Sept. board meeting, and her volunteer labor, lines will be added to the ball court here. The entire surface needs renovation, but the board determined that project will have to be in next year’s budget.

New janitor for the lodge: Jamie Gerloff, administrator, hired Joshua Burroughs to keep the lodge in shape for events. Welcome Joshua to the lake community support team!

The road paving contractor is now projecting first week of October to begin work. The board asks your patience as we upgrade the infrastructure here. Please ensure cars and other vehicles or trailers are off the road starting October 1. Paving work will renovate the Lake Shore surface from the lodge to the dam.

Other updates: The Storage yard upgrade/enlargement is mostly complete. The spots are not labeled yet, but maintenance is starting to put trailers there and will be marking spots in the near future.

The lower entrance security gates are inching toward reality. They will remain open until people are briefed on process and supplied with “fobs” to operate the gates.

Lake celebrity, manager with NASA

Sean Fuller, son of resident Randy Fuller, International Partner Manager, Gateway Program - National Aeronautics and Space Administration

I’m honored to have received NASA’s highest recognition — the Distinguished Service Medal — for fostering and leading the new partnership between NASA and the UAE’s Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre. MBRSC is joining NASA, Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne, European Space Agency - ESA, and JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on the Artemis Gateway program, contributing the crew and science airlock. Together we are forging the future in human space flight and leading humanity deeper into the cosmos. Proud to be part of the team shaping the future — here in the U.S. and around the world.

October days to celebrate

October 1 marks the start of Yom Kippur at sundown. It is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. For traditional Jewish people, it is primarily centered on atonement and repentance.

October 9 is Leif Eriksson Day. He was a Viking explorer who, in approximately 1000 CE (AD), led the first Europeans believed to have set foot on the continent of North America (other than Greenland). The date was chosen because the ship Restauration coming from Stavanger, Norway, arrived in New York Harbor on October 9, 1825, beginning a wave of immigration from Norway to the United States.

October 13, Columbus Day, is a federal holiday, observed on the second Monday in October. It was October 12, 1492, that Christopher Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached Asia. The celebration recognizes that he reached the Americas. Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage, due to the explorer´s origins in Italy. The holiday was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration took place in Colorado in 1907. Thirty years later, Columbus Day become a national holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October, allowing a long weekend.

October 20 is Diwali, India’s “Festival of Lights.” International on-line news usually features beautiful photographs of the celebration.

October 24 is United Nations Day, aiming to bring awareness to the work of the United Nations worldwide.

October 31 is Halloween (All Hallows’ Eve) Halloween originated as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, marking the end of summer and the harvest, where people wore costumes to ward off spirits. The Christian church later incorporated the festival as All Saints Day (November 1st), with the evening before known as "All Hallows Eve," leading to the modern name Halloween. American colonists, particularly Irish immigrants, brought these traditions to the United States, where they evolved into the secular holiday celebrated with costumes, trick-or-treating, carved pumpkins and pumpkin everything to eat and drink.

October Moon and meteors

The Full Harvest Moon

Monday, October 6, 2025, the full Harvest Moon reaches peak illumination at 10:47 pm Central Time. It’s the first of three Supermoons in 2025, the largest and brightest full moon of the year. It will appear bigger, brighter, and more golden.

Because it is a super moon—occurring when the Moon is at perigee, its closest point to Earth—it will appear noticeably larger and brighter than a typical full moon.

October Meteor Showers

Keep an eye out for the Draconid meteor shower in the late evening of October 9, and the Orionid meteor shower in the predawn hours of October 21–22.

In spring when maple buds are red,
We turn the clock an hour ahead;
Which means, each April that arrives,
We lose an hour out of our lives.

Who cares? When autumn birds in flocks
Fly southward, back we turn the clocks,
And so regain a lovely thing
That missing hour we lost in spring.

Recycle for veterans!

Tom Bush has a recent receipt from The Recycling Zone from early September. He raised $98.37 picking up aluminum cans in Peaceful Valley. He donates all the proceeds to the Veteran Honor Flight program each September. The program coordinators use donated funds to take vets to see the veterans memorials in Washington D.C.

He would like to encourage more people in the community to leave cans for him to recycle and donate. Pick up every Monday!
