| | Independence Day happenings on and over the lake!
BOAT PARADE JULY 5: Noon rally at the dam, with your patriotically decorated vessel, to line up for the parade around the lake! Judges will choose best decorations, best costumes and best spirit for $25 gift cards. Wear costumes and make some noise as your neighbors cheer you on from the shores!
FIREWORKS: So the date was way wrong in the June issue of Splash — be ready Saturday July 5 (not 25)! Tom Bush will host the event again, shooting out over the lake from his backyard on Lakeshore. Most people agree, best place to watch is at the lower end of the lake. There are also safe spots to watch from a watercraft (be sure to have navigation lights) and from docks on the long leg of the lake.
You can be part of the event support team in a few ways: donate money for the “works;” or volunteer to help with the show. Contact Tom 573-502-4151, or stop by his house, 1557 Lakeshore. Be in place a little before sundown. Pack chairs and cheers. |

| | | Owensville will host a fireworks display Friday, July 4, Memorial Park, beginning at 4 pm. The event, hosted by the Owensville Fire Department, will include food sales, a flag raising ceremony by the VFW, and activities sponsored by local organizations. Bring a blanket, chairs and picnic. The fireworks will be launched at dark.

July 3 brings the start of the hot and sultry Dog Days of Summer until August 11, tied to the appearance of the Sirius star rising alongside the sun. Ancient people believed that Sirius influenced the weather, among other phenomena, that caused particularly excruciating heat and even drove people and dogs to madness.

July 5 Birthday - Promoter and showman P.T. Barnum (1810-1891) was born in Bethel, Connecticut. His American Museum opened in 1842, exhibiting unusual acts such as the Feejee Mermaid, Siamese Twins Chang and Eng, and General Tom Thumb. In 1871, Barnum opened "The Greatest Show on Earth" in Brooklyn, New York. He later merged with rival J.A. Bailey to form the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
July 16, 1945 - The experimental atomic bomb "Fat Boy" was set off at 5:30 am in the New Mexico desert, creating a mushroom cloud rising 41,000 ft. The bomb emitted heat three times the temperature of the interior of the sun and wiped out all plant and animal life within a mile.
July 16, 1969 - The Apollo 11 Lunar landing mission began with a liftoff from Kennedy Space Center at 9:37 am.
July 18, 1947 - President Harry Truman signed an Executive Order determining the line of succession if the president becomes incapacitated or dies in office. Following the vice president, the speaker of the house and president of the Senate are next in succession. This became the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified February 10, 1967.

| | | | Best: New Moon, July 10, and Full Moon, July 24 (called the Buck Moon because male deer’s antlers are fully developed this month)
Good: The 2 to 3 days before and after a New or Full Moon. Also includes First Quarter and Third Quarter Moon days.
Fair: A couple of days before and after the Quarter Moons.
Poor: Everything else—typically during the waxing and waning crescent phases.
More to great fishing than just the Moon. Here are a few tried-and-true tips on the best times to fish:
Sunrise and Sunset: The “morning rise” and “evening rise” are prime feeding times. Check your local sunrise and sunset for the best windows.
Moonrise and Moonset: Fish feed during these times, too—so keep an eye on your lunar clock. See your daily Moonrise and set.
Before a Storm: Falling pressure stirs fish into a feeding frenzy—briefly. After the storm passes and barometric pressure rises again (1 to 2 days later), fishing picks up again.
During a Fly Hatch: If mayflies or caddis flies are hatching, you’ll want to match your bait to what’s buzzing. Otherwise, the fish will pass.
Winds from the West: A gentle breeze from the west often brings better luck than a cold wind from the north or east. Still or gently rippled waters are ideal too—windy days can scatter the fish and your patience.
Why the Moon MattersLong before weather apps and sonar gear, Native Americans watched the skies and followed the moon phases. ** FYI Pool hours and water aerobics: Pool is open 12 to 7 pm, seven days a week. Water aerobics folks gather for an hour from 10 to 11 am Monday, Wednesday, Friday. Weather can cancel, so watch for thunder storms.
Monday, July 14, 5 pm, Lodge Monthly Public Water Supply District (PWSD) meeting. All are welcome.
From Randy Fuller -- As you may know, there is still one opening on the PWSD board of directors. Requirement: You must have been a full-time lake resident for at least one year. Board meetings are scheduled for 5 pm, 3rd Monday of each month. Meetings typically last about an hour. David Dietrich officially joined the board last month, filling one of the two open positions.

| Plan for Oktoberfest (already!)
In proper German tradition, the lake will celebrate Oktoberfest Sept. 27 at the Gazebo. Kindly contributing members are gathering brats, beer and soda for everyone. Think about a side dish you can bring!
Oktoberfest originated in October 1810 to celebrate the Bavarian Crown Prince's wedding outside Munich. Over time, organizers realized that the weather in October in Bavaria was often cool and rainy, making it less ideal for a large outdoor festival. By shifting the start date to September, the festival could take advantage of longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures.
The festival start date was gradually moved earlier into September, while still ending in early October — to maintain its historical roots.
These days the festival happens all over Germany — and the world, celebrating German food, fun and beer.

The Larkspur flower is for July births, attributing love, happiness, romanticism, and positivity. But, they have other meanings depending on the color. Pink Larkspur flowers represent contempt and disagreement.

Join the Wednesday dinner club 5:30 Wednesdays. The location changes each week. Randy Fuller (or friend) posts on Nextdoor by Wednesday evening where to be the following week. People decide where to meet drawing out of a "hat.” All invited!
