The new public water district was approved 104-13. What happens next? The new board, consisting of Mike Garlock, Rich Hahn, Bob Kayser and Jean Gill will hold the first meeting of the new company on third Saturday of August to get organized and elect officers. They have to wait for the court to give them then new legal name of the company. They will be meeting the lawyers on Aug. 26 to find out the exact wording of the legal name. They will continue to have their meetings on the Saturday at 10:00 AM of every month – members are welcome to attend.

Meet Your Neighbors Regina and Gus Hoernschemeyer
Many PVL members already know Gus and Regina, but in light of the formation of the new Water District, this seems to be a good time to highlight them for all the volunteer (as in unpaid) hours they have put in for the betterment of Peaceful Valley Lake. In fact, Gus was an hour late for this interview because of the water company. As he arrived he said, “Can you believe we spent three hours discussing manholes.
Regina and Gus have been married 58½ years (Regina was only 8 years old when she got married.) They have five daughters and one son, 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Although they lived three years in Indiana when Gus worked for Falstaff, they have lived most of their lives in St. Louis County. Currently they have a condo in Concord Village in South St. Louis County, as well as their beautiful home here in Peaceful Valley.
I was a little confused on the story of how they first met. It seems Regina fixed her good friend up with a date so the friend fixed Regina up with Gus. That left one guy without a date so Regina found somebody for him, too. In the end, all three couples got married – matchmaking at it’s best.
Gus graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He has worked for several different companies i.e. Structural Engineering and Falstaff, but his favorite job was the last one as Manager of Engineering for Fulton Iron Works where he traveled the world building and repairing
sugar mills.
It was her real estate connections that helped her find Peaceful Valley Lake. She was looking at any lake within an hour’s drive of St. Louis County when a real estate friend recommended she look at PVL. She was impressed with how beautiful the lake looked when they first drove down Peaceful Valley Road. They bought their first lots in 1978, but didn’t break ground for their home, which Gus designed, until 1992. They later added an addition of the garage and the room under it, which is now Gus’ office or man cave as Regina calls it.
Gus served six years on the Board of Directors and was the president for four of those years. He began serving on the PVL Service Company board in 2002, and was president for three years. It was in 2012 when the service company applied to renew their permit that they first heard about the ammonia problem with the lagoon. Since then Gus has spent hundreds of hours on this problem along with Karl Kloster, another engineer, and the other members of the board and employees of the service company. The rules of the new water district do not allow any one to be a board member that does not live in the district so Gus and Karl will no longer be on the board. I asked Gus how he felt about this – Sad? Relieved? Proud? Or just happy to be done with it all? He said he and Karl will be “consultants” as long as the new board needs or wants them.”
Regina taught first grade for two years before she married then raised six kids, often while Gus was traveling on the job. She then sold real estate for 30 years with Coldwell Banker. She said she loved helping young couples find a “good deal” on their first home.
Gus loves to do wood working projects. Shown below is a beautiful liquor cabinet he built. I didn’t get a picture that justifies how beautiful and unique the mobile kitchen counter is that he made from wood from the old August Hoernshemeyer and Sons Grocery store. The store was started by Gus’ grandfather in 1922. Gus used to work at the store to earn his college tuition money. The store was modernized in 1952 after some water damage. Gus’ brother, who ran the store until 1967, saved some of the wood from the cabinets.
Every Christmas, Gus designs a wood project for the grandchildren to make as a gift for their parents. In the picture below he is holding a Ferris Wheel that each of the younger grandchildren made. On the shelf above are other Christmas gift projects including some games, a see saw and a dancing Big Foot! Gus also makes Bible stands upon request. Each stand comes with a verse and an Enthronement of the Bible Ceremony. He is also called upon by his daughters to make crosses for the Acts Missions they are involved with through their parish.
The Hoernschemeyers are members of Assumption Parish in St. Louis as well as Immaculate Conception Parish here in Owensville. Family and Faith are very important to Regina and Gus. Many weekends, the lake house is filled to capacity and beyond with family and friends. All of the kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren love to come to the lake. Even Little Gus, their 4 year old fisherman great grandson, when asked where his favorite place is he says “THE LAKE!” Amen to that.
