Welcome to Summer at Peaceful Valley Lake!

New board members

Voted onto the board in a final count, April 27, 2024, at the Annual Meeting, are the following Peaceful Valley Lake members:

Gary Brauks and wife Tina have been members here for 25 years. He brings both a depth of Missouri Conservation Department experience and a passion for fishing and boating to his seat on the board. In addition, he is retired from 35 years amassing handy maintenance skills for the job.

Donald Dietrich, Jr., is patriarch of one of the lake founding families. He and Rhonda have been lot owners since 1975. Having previously served on the board, Don is now retired and will lend a depth of engineering and construction expertise — he already was a force behind road and bridge infrastructure projects for the community.

Tyler Hicks and wife Jessica are newer members, since 2022, but are a native Owensville family. He is now a manager at Jahabow Industries, Inc., having retired from the military and served in law enforcement before moving to Peaceful Valley. Tyler will bring broad management and security expertise to the board.

Community buzz

Increase in annual assessment passed

Online, paper and in-person voting resulted in a narrow margin of members agreeing the community requires an increase in the annual assessment from previous $395 per lot to $465. Board president, Julia Baker, explained the increase will allow the budget to meet inflationary pressures, address upgrades for infrastructure, roads and drainage projects, and meet expected legal and insurance costs.

The pool will be open for Memorial Day weekend!

Julia and Brad Baker effectively sealed a leak apparent last year and the maintenance team is getting the pool and deck ready for opening weekend. Be there Thursday, May 23, 12 noon until 7 pm for the first day. Hours will be same as last year, with some flex that will be posted on the website.

The Campground is open

Be sure to reserve a favorite space well in advance in order to have hook-ups you would like. Requested power upgrades will not be addressed this year, though it has been researched. Since it will involve a considerable expense to bring in 220 service, decision was made to delay the project.

Good news about the Gazebo!

After many years during which the upgrade was delayed, the Gazebo will get power this year so it can be more functional for community gatherings.

Volunteers needed for Beautification Committee

Historically, members of the community have attended to community vegetation that is usually close to their home. In recent years, those dedicated gardeners (Master Gardeners in some cases) have advanced to consulting. They will be more than happy to get anyone started with weeding, mulching, and planting near where you live. Please contact Joan Strong ([email protected]) for information and/or to sign up.

The swallows have returned! Chatter is back at the lower gate…

Emergency alert links you should know

If you would like weather alerts, including severe storm warnings and spring-season tornadoes:

1. Get local alerts for the Owensville area, Gasconade County, HERE. You can also go to the county Emergency Management Agency FaceBook and register to get notified via phone or text. You will have to log in and access “my account” HERE

2. You can download the FEMA app for personalized weather alerts and resources from Google Play and the Apple Store. It is a free service you can customize to your location.

3. You can also activate Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your cell phone in SETTINGS. These FEMA alerts are sent to your mobile device wherever you may be in harm’s way, without the need to download an app or subscribe to a service. WEAs do not track your location. They are broadcast from area cell towers to mobile phones within the defined geographic location of the alert.

See Weather Radio article

for information about purchasing your own customizable device --->

Seven boat slips were awarded for summer months to seven boaters, 6 at the main marina and 1 on the Woodson side. Those slips will be marked with a number for private use.

NOAA Weather Radio for peak tornado season

Weather radios are available at electronics stores across the country, ranging in cost from $25 to $100 or more, depending on the quality of the receiver and number of features.

What to Look for in a NOAA Weather Radio

The most desirable feature is an alarm tone. This allows you to have the radio turned on but silent, listening for a special tone that is broadcast before watch and warning messages that give immediate information about a life-threatening situation.

Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME) technology, a feature available since the mid-1990s, is capable of providing detailed, area-specific information. Unlike other NOAA Weather Radios, the SAME feature will filter out alerts that do not affect your immediate area.

It should operate on batteries during times when electrical service may be interrupted. Look for radios with an AC adapter and battery compartment.

The radio should be tuneable to all seven NWR frequencies. For the latest list of frequencies and transmitter locations, check the NOAA Weather Radio website.

The hearing and visually impaired can receive watches and warnings by connecting weather radio alarms to other kinds of attention-getting devices, such as strobe lights, pagers, bed-shakers, personal computers, and text printers.

The map below, from the National Weather Service website, shows average areas of risk for tornadoes during the May season.

May full Flower Moon appears Thursday, May 23, reaching peak illumination at 8:53 am (CST). It will be below the horizon then, so, to see this May’s Flower Moon, step outside on the night of the 23rd or 24th.

Counting Fish

May 21st is the tentative date for environmental assessment of Peaceful Valley Lake, weather permitting. Scott Williams, a Biologist from the Missouri Department of Conservation, will complete an electrofishing survey of our lake. The purpose of the survey is to assess the fish population and overall lake conditions.

He did the last survey in 2019. For safety, he asks that boats and members steer clear of his vessel while he manages the fish and gathers data. The fish will be returned to the water unharmed.

Scott welcomes members to meet him and ask questions at the marina as he completes the process and docks his boat.

We will get official reports a few weeks later with specific recommendations, however he can give us some preliminary information that day based on his years of experience.

Holidays in May

May 1 is May Day. Mark the return of spring! Flowers celebrating the month are Lilly of the Valley and Hawthorn. May Day is also “Lei Day” in Hawaii. Leis are garlands or wreaths often made with native Hawaiian flowers like plumeria.

May 5 is Cinco de Mayo (“The Fifth of May”), celebrating the victory of the Mexican army over the French army at The Battle of Puebla in 1862.

May 12 is Mother’s Day—don’t forget to send or bring love!

May 28 is Armed Forces Day, honoring those in all branches of the United States military.

May 22 is National Maritime Day. Created in commemoration of the first transoceanic voyage via steamboat (completed by the U.S.S. Savannah in 1819), this holiday recognizes the U.S. merchant marine in both war and peace.

May 27 is Memorial Day—a reminder of the tenacity of life during war. It’s tradition to fly the Stars and Stripes on this day.

From W. H. Davies poem In May

Yes, I will spend the livelong day
With Nature in this month of May;
And sit beneath the trees, and share
My bread with birds whose homes are there …

Fishing Tourney

Saturday May 18 marks the first Peaceful Valley Karl Kurtz Memorial Fishing Tournament! The competition will be open to all members in good standing with registered boats. Entrance fee is still to be determined.

Brian Tharp will be working details with fisherpeople around the community. If you want to assist, contact him at 660-787-0058, or by email at [email protected].

Boater certification

Since watercraft operators must carry a certification card with them in Missouri, the board has added a stipulation on your boat registration signed form that requires those under the age of 21 to have taken the course.

They must be able to produce proof of taking the class while on the water here. This also applies to those who reside out of state.

You can also take the class online.

Reminders

No discharge of firearms are allowed at Peaceful Valley Lake, according to No. 11, Abstract of Restrictions, page 36 of your Membership Handbook. Residents have registered complaints — yeah, hard not to notice…

Potential flooding events: Now that we are in the rainy season, remember to clear your ditches and culverts to allow water to drain through instead of over. People down hill from you will be grateful for your attention.

Dogs and other pets: Any outdoor pets, and pets that go outdoors, need to be either fenced or leashed for general well-being of all pets and people — that’s according to community bylaws. People are hesitant to take their own dogs out because other loose dogs run at them while they walk, jog or run on the road. Please be aware of your neighbors!
