Peaceful Valley Carl Kurtz Memorial Bass Fishing Tournament results!

By noon on a perfect day, all six boats were in and all boaters were sun-touched and happy! The tourney was held Saturday, May 18.

Carl’s grandson, Kyle Kannawurf, won the Biggest Bass portion, channeling the proud grandad, and Carolyn Finnigan came in a close second.

Team Tharp’s (brothers Rick and Brian) boat won first place with the heaviest combined weight of five fish. Kyle and brother Dale took second place, and Matt Mosher and his mom, Deb, placed third.

Brian Tharp and family directed the competition and participated, both gracious-hosts and competent anglers!

Lake ecology study

Scott Williams, a Biologist from the Missouri Department of Conservation, completed an electrofishing survey of Peaceful Valley Lake May 21.

The conservation team had a successful study with beautiful weather working in their favor. Scott said there are plenty of fish out there. He and his assistant were able to test a good variety from several natural habitats around the lake.

He said there are possibly too many bass, that’s why they are not large. They are just starting to spawn now, so will be done by June 15th. (Get out there and fish like a champion to bring the population down!)

They got a few cats. They suggested we likely have too many gizzard shad, which compete with blue gill species and end up overpowering them. These shad are not good for fishing -- but they feed other fish.

Blue gill will spawn here all summer long. Scott said he was not able to snag any of them at this point but said that’s normal as they require different equipment.

The team did document several Redear Sunfish. “These magnum panfish, sometimes called shellcrackers, are hard fighters and prized on the table,” according to RealTree.com.

Scott will send the a report within a few weeks, so look for official results in the July issue of Splash. Jamie Gerloff contributed to this summary, recording eye-witness, expert-sourced commentary at the marina.

Compost and burn pit area is closed

The area is chained off as of May 27, end of the long Memorial Day weekend. Members can contact maintenance between 8 and 10 am, on weekdays, if they want to deposit compostable yard waste.

Pictures below show that people are “depositing” construction waste and old furniture — and other things that cannot be defined as compostable material. Please be mindful that the lake community association is unable to burn piles of rubbish per direction from Missouri Department of Conservation and may incur fines:

“Any waste generated by a business, trade, industry, salvage or demolition operation cannot be burned without a permit issued by the Department of Natural Resources or its delegated local agency. Permits will only be considered for untreated wood wastes. Wastes that may not be burned include but are not limited to tires, rubber products, hazardous materials, Styrofoam(TM), plastics, petroleum-based products, demolition waste, treated wood and any asbestos-containing material.”

Further on that messy subject, the dumpster at the maintenance shop is not for member use. It cannot be used for household trash (you are obliged to contract with a trash removal service) and for large items like mattresses and furniture. The board has not budgeted for multiple removals of the big dumpster during short periods. It is expensive.

The community board has discussed these issues and may plan and budget for annual dumpster days. In the mean time, members may not use the compost area or the maintenance shop dumpster. Your contractor, delivery service, or trash removal service are designated for that purpose, just as in any city or town. (Also see recycling initiative in notices column.)

Last year the board worked with MDC for guidelines. There were complaints of constant smoke at residences near the burn pit. Result is periodic controlled burns and the composting alternative.

There are cameras at those locations, so be aware that the security team has the ability to trace irregular “deposits.”

Emergency alert links you should know

If you would like weather alerts, including severe storm warnings and spring-season tornadoes:

1. Get local alerts for the Owensville area, Gasconade County, HERE. You can also go to the county Emergency Management Agency FaceBook and register to get notified via phone or text. You will have to log in and access “my account” HERE

2. You can download the FEMA app for personalized weather alerts and resources from Google Play and the Apple Store. It is a free service you can customize to your location.

3. You can also activate Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your cell phone in SETTINGS. These FEMA alerts are sent to your mobile device wherever you may be in harm’s way, without the need to download an app or subscribe to a service. WEAs do not track your location. They are broadcast from area cell towers to mobile phones within the defined geographic location of the alert.

Volunteers needed for Beautification Committee

Historically, members of the community have attended to community vegetation that is usually close to their home. In recent years, those dedicated gardeners (Master Gardeners in some cases) have advanced to consulting. They will be more than happy to get anyone started with weeding, mulching, and planting near where you live. Please contact Joan Strong ([email protected]) for information and/or to sign up.

Bumps are in and Speed is 20 mph!

Be aware of your speed as you drive through the community — during summer months in particular! There are more children out, especially on roads in beach and pool areas.

Remind young drivers and guests to drive carefully with an eye out for other, slower vehicles, people walking, and children. Speed is 20 mph on all roads here.

At left is demolition waste in the compost area Monday, May 27. Above is the dumpster the same day — since then having grown larger with two mattresses Tuesday morning!

Solstice Full Moon, June 2024

On the evening of Friday, June 21 —just after sunset, 8:10 pm local time, the moon will reach full illumination. Look towards the southeast to watch the full Moon rise above the horizon. There, it will appear large and golden.

This Full Moon is unique, being near the summer solstice, when the Sun is highest in the sky. Because the Moon is always opposite the Sun, the arc the Moon traces is lower on the horizon than the Sun ever is.

This low a point on the horizon is a sight that won’t return for another 18 years!

From The Farmers Almanac

About the Sun

At the summer solstice, the Sun travels the longest path through the sky. That day has the most daylight — and conversely, the shortest night.

According to the astronomical definition, the summer solstice marks the beginning of summer, which lasts until the autumnal equinox (September 22 or 23 in the Northern Hemisphere, or March 20 or 21 in the Southern Hemisphere).

The day has been, and is, celebrated in many cultures. For example, in Scandinavia, the holiday of Midsummer’s Eve is observed on a weekend near the time of the solstice.

From Encyclopedia Brittanica

Hello June!

June 5 is World Environment Day, meant to raise environmental awareness across the globe.

June 14 is Flag Day (U.S.). Be sure to raise the flag!

June 16 is Father’s Day. Celebrate with all fathers in your family!

June 19 is Juneteenth (also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day). On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation aloud in Galveston, Texas, effectively liberating slaves in the state.

June 20 is the summer solstice, heralding the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. It’s the day with the most hours of daylight. In the Southern Hemisphere, winter begins.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day (Canada).

June 24 brings Midsummer Day, traditionally the midpoint of the growing season, halfway between planting and harvesting.
